A cutting edge fast track to writing great songs

30 seconds interview: Emily Burns

Rising star Emily Burns wraps R&B inflections and tropical house textures around a classic songwriting styles, best heard on new single Take It Or Leave It.

Produced by Sound Of Fractures (Raye, Ritual and Miles Glyphers), the tune caps off a buzzy year for Emily and bodes well for 2017. Her rise over the last 12 months is based on love from music blogs, online scribes and much loved performances at this year’s T in the Park and Great Escape festivals, as well as previous single, Homewrecker.

She’s also spent time preparing for next year, working with the writers and producers including Emre Ramazanoglu (Ritual, Petite Meller, Jones) and Jimmy Hogarth (Lianne La Havas, Sia, Amy Winehouse).

If you’re a fan of Jessie Ware or the electronic pop of Nao, then Emily might just be your new favourite act. Check her at The Sanctum Hotel, Soho, London on 30 November

I first started writing music because…
I love words. English and theatre studies were always my favourite subjects at school. I just fell in love with the language and how small words can make people feel big things. I wanted to write songs that make people feel things. Good things, hopefully.

I have been making music since…
I was six! I wrote my first song at six and then picked up a guitar when I was around eight … I haven’t really stopped since!

My music is…
Honest. I like telling real stories in my music.

You’ll like my music if you listen to…
Nao, Jones, Banks, anything soulful and poppy.

My favourite venue is…
I love The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch. I played my first ever headline show there earlier this year and it was one of the best nights of my life!

Music is important because…
It’s a universal language.

My biggest inspiration is…
Heartache. This is not a sob story I promise! I just always seem to write my best songs when I’m going through some sort of relationship turmoil.

My dream collaboration would be…
Frank Ocean.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Take It Or Leave It.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Opening a vegetarian tapas place somewhere hot and sunny.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Travelling around the world with my music.
