The Hit Songwriting Formula

A cutting edge fast track to writing great songs

30 seconds interview: The Amazons

Reading quartet The Amazons are a tribe unto their own – a sprawling, raucous indie-rock juggernaut fuelled by sturdy pop hooks.

Over the last 18 months, their stereoscopic sounds have busted from their suburban bedrooms into the studio, taking on a new life as radio-ready, stage-primed anthems.

Their newest cut, Little Something, is a chaos of searing guitars and ominous lyrics – a dark left turn for a band looking for that little bit more. And, with an official spot on BBC Radio 1’s C-list, it’s their hardest hitting yet.

Officially branded as hot property by Steve Lamacq and Annie Mac, they’ve also been tipped in the BBC’s Sound of 2017 poll, plus MTV’s Brand New For 2017 and Apple Music’s New Artists 2017 lists.

With all the moves and melodies ready, they’re out on a 19-date headline tour this spring (dates below), with a debut LP for Fiction Records expected soon too.

For our first 30 Seconds Interview of 2017, we thought it only right to catch up with a band have the year at their feet, ready for the taking…

We first started making music because…
Mainly because it was really fun.. and we couldn’t do anything else very well

We have been making music since…
We started The Amazons in 2014, but we’ve making music in various guises for a decade now.

Our music is…
Always evolving.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana.

Our favourite venue is…
Olympia Theatre, Dublin

Music is important because…
It’s one of the few things that unites everyone. It’s like a universal language.

Our biggest inspiration is…
The music on our Spotify playlist On The Road’

Our dream collaboration would be…
I think MØ has a voice that would sound great on one of our tracks.

To try us out, listen to our song…
In My Mind, I wrote the riff hungover on the drive from Glasgow to Reading.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Doing vastly different things I expect. I turned down a place at university to do history so maybe a member of Time Team.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Making the best music we’ve ever made.
