Barbecues, gunfire and phlegm: Idles give their final verdict on SXSW

Agit-punk rockers Idles are one of the most excessive live bands around at the moment, a riot of elbows, angst and (literally) barefaced cheek.

The quintet have been brewing their visceral rock n roll for nearly five years, systematically unleashing a tirade of anti-establishment tracks that buzz with anarchist exhilaration.

Over the last year or so, the Bristol-based bedlam has spilled its banks to claim fans across the UK and beyond, with Idles super-fan BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq leading the charge.

Having whipped up our grassroots venues into a sweaty lather, they hopped over the pond earlier this month to show SXSW what they’re made of. We get the skinny on how it went…

Describe SXSW in three words.
Bar. Be. Cue

What was the best bit about playing live out there?
The Austinians were a beautiful lot!

How did your shows go down?
They went much better than expected! They loved the phlegm and the songs so all were happy.

What was the best band you saw?
Life were a magical force.

Best food experience of the week?
Cooper’s brisket.

Weirdest thing you saw/tasted/experienced?
We got held in one of the venues because someone got shot.

Any advice for UK artists thinking about going next year?
Work hard.

Idles received support from BBC Introducing and PRS Foundation to attend SXSW.
