Who? Poppy Ajudha.

What? Timeless soul meets 21st century jazz.

From where? South London.

What’s the story? Although Poppy’s only been uploading her music to SoundCloud for little over a year now, she’s no stranger to the performer’s life.

Since the age of five, the singer songwriter has been immersed in the jazz, soul, rocksteady and roots of her dad’s Paradise Bar in Deptford, London.

Drinking in the fusion flowing from its stage and DJ booth, she’s since found her own sound, steeped in the stoic self-awareness of Amy Winehouse and Gil Scott-Heron.

Her latest release, Love Falls Down, is a shimmering slice of R&B and jazz loveliness – her sassy vocal hooks primped by retro sax refrains and organ flourishes.

It’s a huge calling card, that’s pricked the ears of everyone from Red Bull to Jazz Standard and now PRS Foundation, which announced last week that she’s among the latest recipients of its Women Make Music fund.

She’s also found fans in Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 1’s Phil Taggart and Jamz Supernova, and with a debut EP in the pipeline, Poppy is set to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in UK jazz this year. With one of the genre’s strongest generations set to graduate in 2017, this is high praise indeed for a songwriter with just three singles under her belt.

Sounds like? The sizzling side of brand new British jazz.

Must hear? Love Falls Down
