A cutting edge fast track to writing great songs

30 seconds interview: Charlotte Carpenter

Singer songwriter Charlotte Carpenter channels Americana’s darker underbelly for her intimate, confessional songs.

This young story teller comes on like PJ Harvey’s younger sister on her forthcoming release, the How Are We To Ever Know? EP. The hype is lying thickly for Charlotte with her previous EP, The Fault Line also attracting some serious props from BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, the Line of Best Fit and NME.

She’s also a serious live proposition, touring the country with the likes of Marika Hackman and George Ezra as well as headlining her own solo dates. Check out her forthcoming live dates in June. If you like your singer songwriters to show off a raw, heartfelt honesty, then Charlotte and her music are for you…

I first started writing music because…
It was fuelled by teen angst if I’m honest. I was at school and was beginning to feel quite different to my friends, beginning to enjoy different music to them, and started to spend my time with new people. I guess in some ways I was shaping into more of self-assured young woman and I wrote about that. My first ever song was called See Me Fly and it sounds like something from a Disney film.

I have been making music since…
I was 14 when I started to learn the guitar and it wasn’t long after until I started writing little songs in my bedroom.

My music is…
Emotional and honest.

You’ll like my music if you listen to…
Songs with twangy guitars and too much tremolo.

My favourite venue is…
The Cookie, Leicester.

Music is important because…
It allows us to communicate some things we often cannot say or make sense of ourselves.

My biggest inspiration is…
My family.

My dream collaboration would be…
Bonnie Raitt.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Am I Alone In This?

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Looking after stray cats or saving whales.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Possibly having my first child after a few world tours, own a VW camper van and be able to play slide guitar just like Bonnie Raitt.
