Worcester’s HVMM are a four-piece riffing on their Black Country rock n roll heritage, adding sartorial Victoriana and bluesy noir for maximum swagger.
Like Idles dabbling with the Bad Seeds’ back catalogue, it’s a classy sound laced with collarless cotton, cravats and big old amps.
Underpinning all the theatrical tension are guitarist Ebony Clay and bassist Jack Timmis, who keep perfect un-time with off-kilter riffs and racy twangs.
Drummer Sam Jenkins propels their minimal sound ever forwards, with singer Andy Teece’s rhythmic vocals coming on like the Midlands’ answer to Jack White.
With cracking new track Lacerate now out in the world, and their debut EP Talk To Me Like I’m Dead slated for 1 September, we caught up with Andy to find out what’s been fuelling their music…
What was the first song you developed an obsession for?
Oasis – Talk Tonight. At the end of the song, the final line ‘about how you saved my life’ felt so honest and exposed, and at a young age this was the first thing that pulled me into getting past the immediate.
What’s the first gig you went to?
System of a Down touring their first album.
What’s the first instrument you ever got hold of?
What is your worst musical habit?
Relying on old tricks rather than pushing to create or learn about new ones.
What’s the best piece of musical advice you’ve ever been given?
It wasn’t advice given personally but this Nick Cave quote certainly hit home – ‘Inspiration is a word used by people who aren’t really doing anything’.
Where do you discover new music?
At the record shop. I still like to buy albums I’ve never heard of based on the artwork. The first time I did this I stumbled on [The White Stripes’] De Stijl a good few years ago. Never looked back.
What’s your favourite venue?
There are so many things that fall into place to make a great live show from a personal perspective. The crowd, general mood on the day, the venue etc, so wherever that happens!
Who is your current favourite band/artist?
I’m in a revisiting stage, so Tom Waits.
What inspirations outside of music impact your songwriting?
Any person or situation that offers up the unexpected.
What track of yours best represents your sound?
The next song I haven’t written. If I had to choose I would say Lacerate. As structurally and sonically, it opens up options.
What’s next for you?
Work towards doing everything better than we are at present.
Upcoming live dates:
22 July – Tramlines Festival – Sheffield
2 August – Robin 2 – Wolverhampton
5 August – The Iron Road – Evesham
2 September – EP Launch – Marrs Bar – Worcester
