Who? Coby Sey
What? Grimy electronics and sludgy hip-hop.
From where? Lewisham.
What’s the story? Although Coby has only recently dropped his spookily accomplished first EP, Whities010, he’s been working behind the scenes for a while now.
Alongside production credits for the likes of Mica Levi, DELS, Tirzah and Klein, he created the soundtrack to artist Chloe Dewe Mathews’ video installation Congregation, which made its Tate Modern debut in May 2014.
He’s also been busy making his mark at NTS Radio, with a regular monthly deluge of sedated hip-hop, drone, ambience and electronics that connects the sounds he loves and defines his inspirations.
Like Dean Blunt and Actress before him, he’s able to hold up a mirror to the full spectrum of nocturnal London’s grit and reflect back something completely new.
All Change, a standout from his EP, which was released via Nic Tasker’s Whities label last month, is a compelling slice of grime-licked, post-club electronics.
It forms the introverted centrepiece to a rangy record, which slips in and out with sync with itself as Coby experiments with piano, post-punk and cracked hip-hop.
If you haven’t already tracked it down, you need to get hold of this record…
Sounds like? An essential new voice for the capital and beyond.
Must hear? Coby’s ode to the DLR, All Change:
