The untimely passing of Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell just days ago has shocked the world of music, and tributes have since flowed in from fellow musicians.
Following the revelation that 52-year old Cornell’s death had been ruled as a suicide, police have now detailed a report pertaining to the singer’s final movements.
Detroit News reports that shortly following the conclusion of Soundgarden’s Detroit gig, Chris Cornell walked back to his hotel room with bodyguard Martin Kirsten. Kirsten entered the room around 11:30pm to help Cornell fix his computer before giving him two Ativan, which Cornell took for anxiety.
Cornell then had a disturbing conversation with his wife Vicky, in which he sounded “groggy” and repeated “I am just tired” over and over as he slurred his words. He also said he had taken “an extra Ativan or two”.
A worried Vicky called Kirsten shortly after the phone call, asking him to check on Chris, but the bodyguard could not access his room as it was locked and latched from the inside.
Security then refused to assist Kirsten in gaining entry, so he took matters into his own hands, kicking down the door to find Cornell “on the bathroom floor”, with a red exercise band around his neck and blood running out of his mouth.
A hotel medic attended the room just before 1am, untied the band from Cornell’s neck and began CPR. At 1am more paramedics arrived, and continued CPR before a doctor pronounced Cornell dead at 1:30am.
In a statement Cornell family lawyer Kirk Pasich says that Vicky and the Cornell family are awaiting the results of toxicology tests. “The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions,” said Pasich.
