ICYMI: The Splendour In The Grass 2017 act served Tennis champ Margaret Court with a passionate statement opposing her homophobic stance on same-sex nuptials, and announcing a night celebrating “positivity and inclusion” to raise funds supporting Australian marriage equality during their Splendour sideshow at the arena that bears her name.
And here’s the t-shirt design they’ll be selling to raise said funds:
The crest was designed especially for the occasion by London-based illustrator Andrew Rae, who says: “What an amazing commission, combining awareness about marriage equality with the amazing Sigur Rós in a hand drawn crest to raise money to support Australian Marriage Equality… of course I’m saying yes.”
“That anyone still has to raise awareness about marriage equality in this day and age seems bizarre to me. As long as some people still think they have the right to decide who other people fall in love with then there’s still work to be done.”
Sigur Rós add: “We know Margaret Court’s opinions are not shared by the majority of Australians. We want to add our voice to the call for marriage equality in Australia — right here on Margaret Court Arena itself. Australia should be a country that celebrates positivity and inclusion, as well as achievement on the sporting field.”
And the shirts won’t just be available at the Icelandic trio’s Margaret Court Arena show on Thursday, 27th July either, but at all their Aussie dates including Splendour In The Grass itself.
Meanwhile, punters who’ll be missing out on seeing the band live can still show their support by purchasing one of the shirts from the band’s official merch site.
