These days Wikipedia is generally accepted as being pretty accurate thanks to the huge number of moderators, especially on well-publicised topics like who the members of a band are. The site won’t ever be 100% accurate though, due to the fact that pretty much anyone can jump on and make edits (even if they don’t stick for long).
The latest case of someone sneakily changing the site occurred over the weekend in the UK where a teenage fan of the band The Sherlocks managed to bluff his way into a the VIP section of a show by convincing security he was related to a band member.
As Daily Mail reports, a lad by the name of Adam Boyd was watching his favourite band play when he decided he wasn’t happy with his view, so he edited the Wikipedia page for the band to read “They released their first single, Live For The Moment, in 2014, influenced by main vocalist Kiaran Crook’s cousin Adam Boyd”.
“I cannot believe it worked. I was expecting to be kicked out for trying,” Boyd told Daily Mail. “I looked up and saw the VIP entrance and told my friends ‘I’m going to try and get up there’ but they were calling me an idiot and saying I wouldn’t get in.
“Regardless I went up, made my way to the area, and realised I had no way of actually getting in,” he continued. “I needed an excuse, a reason to be let in. I don’t know how the idea climbed to the top of all the other drunken ones I was probably having then, but it came to me to change their wiki page so I was included in it.”
The page has since been changed back, but Boyd posted his story to Facebook after the show, including a killer picture of his view from the VIP section. Check it out below.
If this all sounds a bit familiar, it’s happened before here in Australia. In December of 2015 a punter snuck into a Peking Duk show having changed the boys’ Wiki page to read that he was a family member of one of them.
